A love for classic cars is essentially a prerequisite for auto mechanics. Mr. Garcia was no exception. He was known for his ’67 Chevy Chevelle. However, one problem stood in the way of designing this monument with the iconic Chevy as the focus; the “Catholic nature” of the cemetery. In order to be within the cemetery guidelines, we decided to use key elements of the car and incorporate them into the stone inconspicuously. The main stone is cut to the shape of the body style and uses racing stripes to accentuate the cross. The lower stone draws inspiration from the detailing and stylistic features of the Chevelle grill. Incorporating the car in this way gave the Garcia family a monument that still conforms to the cemetery’s restrictions but has personal and distinct characteristics that are only recognizable to the family and classic car enthusiasts.
