This axed Barre granite monument rendering was conceived for Thomas Eakins who was known for his realism especially in portraiture and introduction of photography in the art studio. His black and white porcelain portrait is surrounded by a cutout in the granite with the idea that the landscape of the cemetery will provide the color backdrop for this realist (often know as “naturalist”) painter and black and white photographic pioneer. Straight lines and austere finishes are used to emphasize the mundane and focus on the subject, Eakins himself.
