This white marble cenotaph stands 7’6″ tall from grade and is positioned on a 12′ x 3’6″ sandstone base. On the sandstone base two granite interpretive plaques are mounted. A bed of crushed white marble surrounds the base and in enclosed in a pressure treated hemlock frame.
Titled “Beacon”, this cenotaph is backed by a green belt of Douglas fir and hemlock and stands at the top incline of the veterans’ section at Royal Oak cemetery. The white marble is very complimentary in front of the treed setting and represents a compass star with eight arms to represents the cardinal and ordinal aspects of a compass. Three hand textured rays are on each of the eight arm and they represent the three branches of the military – Navy, Army, Airforce.
