Melody was a tall and beautiful woman, full of irreverent humor, who loved to swim in the Salish Sea that surrounds our small gulf island. I’d known her and her family for three decades, and she had requested that they commission me for her monument before she passed. Her granddaughter, who is a jewelry designer requested a white disc as a central feature, which for me became the moon. I cut the droplet into the granite below the marble moon to echo the rain that falls so plentifully through our dark winters, and also hint at the laugh that used to ring from her crooked smile. The stylized typeface seemed Nordic so I felt it reflected her heritage well and the inlaid aventurine quartz droplets ensure the celebratory mood of this monument.
