Their Irish heritage was very important to this family and they wanted it commemorated on the stone. Fishing had been the family source of income for many generations hence the sailboat between the dates. Because the cemetery requires the predominant symbol be Christian in nature, the Celtic cross was engraved along the left side. The Irish style font was all hand cut to support the overall theme of the marker.
